Course highlights

Start and finish at the piazza di Castelnuovo Berardenga. KM 1–5 – New passages inside the most prestigious companies of Chianti Classico, Poggio Bonelli, Castelli in Villa, Castello di Bossi, San Felice, Castello di Brolio, Villa a Sesta, Tenuta di Arceno, where the iconic cypress avenue will be crossed, and Fèlsina. After the start, the athletes will face 4.5 km on an easy asphalt, with a passage inside the ancient monastery, now a farm, Pacina from which to admire the panorama that on one side opens onto the characteristic hills of Chianti and on the other side onto the gentle Crete Senesi. This is the lowest point, 220 m above sea level, from which they face 2 km of climbing on a dirt road to reach an altitude of 350 m above sea level and the first refreshment point located near the Poggio Bonelli farmhouse. KM 5–11 – The route continues with a mix of dirt road alternating with country road and an easy altimetry until the fork at km 7.7 at 341 m above sea level where the athletes of the EcoMaratonina del Chianti Classico 21Km and Tra il bosco e le vigne del Chianti 13Km will break away. Just a few hundred meters before meeting the refreshment point at km 8.5 from which begins a descent that leads to km 11 at 230 m above sea level and which will allow you to admire the suggestive Crete Senesi. KM 11–18 – The road changes and becomes first a field and then a single track in the middle of the woods before meeting the Castello di Bossi winery located at km 13 at an altitude of 324 m above sea level and from which you can admire the profile of Siena on the horizon. A short stretch of asphalt leads to the San Felice vineyards and the Vitarium, the pergola near km 15.5 from which a slight descent begins on a forest road to km 16.75 at 280 m above sea level. Here a slight climb begins on a country road that leads to admire the holm oak immortalized in the scenes of the film “Stealing Beauty” by Bernardo Bertolucci, where a refreshment point is set up and in the background an extraordinary panorama will be visible. KM 18–27 – From here the route enters the territories of the Castello di Brolio which will be encountered at km 21.5 (435 m above sea level) and where the Casale Podernovi is located, among hills painted by the vineyards with autumn colors that will lead to km 24 (390 m above sea level) to the San Felice company where a refreshment point will be located. The descent on a dirt road begins until km 25.6 (290 m above sea level) followed by a short but challenging climb at the top where there will be a refreshment point and the Villa di Pagliaia. KM 27–36 – It is the right time to catch your breath by tackling the descent on a vineyard road until km 27.4 which joins the cypress-lined avenue that leads to the Castelli in Villa company after having faced a short but challenging climb. The road flattens out and becomes dirt in the direction of the Montecucco oil mill (km 29.7) where there is a refreshment point to smell the scents of the new oil just pressed and taste some excellent bruschetta. The plain and descent lead to the valley floor at 320 m above sea level, followed by a very short climb of about 400 meters at 15% that will lead in the direction of Arceno at km 31.8, here there will be another crossroads to separate the athletes of Tra il bosco e le vigne del Chianti 13Km and the EcoPasseggiata. The route runs along the vineyard with the typical waves of the Tenuta di Arceno at 350 m above sea level and then continues on a dirt road slightly uphill for about 3 km through centuries-old holm oaks until entering the avenue of cypresses, where at the end of the climb there is a refreshment point (km 35.8 km, 450 m above sea level). KM 36–FINISH LINE – From Villa Arceno, continue on a dirt road downhill for 2 km to 290 m above sea level. to reach km 39 from which to tackle a challenging climb of 660 meters at the top of which is the Casale di Rancia refreshment point. From here you can see Castelnuovo Berardenga, where the finish line is located and which you arrive at after a gentle descent along the cypress-lined avenue of the Fèlsina winery from which, after a short descent and climb, you arrive unexpectedly, along an unpaved road at the finish line arriving in Piazza Marconi with the joy of those who have experienced a special day.

Ecomaratona del Chianti : discovering the Toscan countryside

03 May, 2012 (Thu)

§staticmap(2269,5,450,250)Hello, on October 21th 2012, you’ll be organizing the Ecomaratona del Chianti, the Chianti Trail 18km and Ecopasseggiata 10 km . Can you tell us where it is located? The race is located in and around an old little village, Castelnuovo Berardenga, close to Siena in the hearth of Tuscany. How old is the race and why was it created in the first place? The Ecomaratona del Chianti is celebrating its 6th year whereas for the Chianti Trail we’re at 5th edition. We started out with the longest distance but we wanted to give everyone the chance to participate in this wonderful event so we created the Chianti Trail. The idea behind the race is to combine the famous culture of Tuscany with running and allow the participants to absorb this both before, during and after the race. Credit : Ecomaratona del ChiantiWhat kind of route have you set up for the runners? How would you describe it? It’s a simple trail in the sense that no specific requirements are needed and can be performed wearing normal running shoes. Everything is off-road on straightforward trails. The focus is to give the participant an impression of the Tuscany scenery while running on the soft hills passing vineyards, olives and the characteristic cypresses. Every now and then you’ll pass beautiful castles and small villages created more than 500 years ago. The record of the race is 2h 53’ which reflects the perfect compromise between challenging trail, a beautiful scenery and a race for everyone. How many runners do you expect on Sunday morning? What type of runners do you plan to attract? On October 21th there will be more than 2,800 participants. The Ecomaratona will attract about 600, the Chianti Trail 900, and for the Ecopasseggiata 10km we expect more than 1,300 participants on that day! We are the most famous and largest Ecomaratona in Italy. At that time of the year, what kind of weather can we expect? The weather is usually between 10-20 degrees Celsius; perfect for running! Credit : Ecomaratona del ChiantiHave you planned festivities around the marathon? We organize a free and incredible rich Pasta Party in true Tuscan style both on the Saturday before the race and Sunday immediately after the race. On the Saturday we organize free tourist visits to the old castle and the canteen of the village. The race finished, what advice would you give a runner who has never been to Castelnuovo Berardenga – Siena before? A good restaurant, a fancy sightseeing? To recover from the race we recommend trying out our famous cuisine with pasta and Fiorentina steak, our world-class wines, and then simply to find a nice place in the sun, relax and have a look at the beautiful scenery. That’s all!! In a single sentence, what would you tell the readers of ahotu Marathons to make them register for the Ecomaratona del Chianti? A wonderful place, delicious meals, famous wines, our history and an incredibly well-organized event will give you the opportunity to spend a fantastic weekend in Italy and to run in a fantastic place. Everyone receives a stunning Finisher Medal, a technical t-shirt and a good bottle of wine! Interview with Christian Tozzi.
