Fat Dog 120 Trail Race

§staticmap(9504,5,450,250) On August 16-18, 2013 you’ll be organizing the Fat Dog 100 Trail Race. Can you tell us where it is located? Fat Dog is located in Manning Park, BC, which is a 3-hour drive from Vancouver, Canada. How old is the race and why was it created in the first place? Created in 2010, I noticed that many Canadians were going to the US for long distance races so I thought we should have more here. We also wanted to showcase some amazing mountain trails. What kind of route have you set up for the runners? How would you describe it? The route is challenging due to the climbs. With 95% single track, racers have described it as stunning, wildflower heaven. There are 3 major climbs over the 120-mile route and one major one for the 70, 50, 30 and 20-mile routes. Outside Online has included the 120-mile event in their top 9 toughest ultras in the world. Credit : Heather Macdonald How many runners do you expect on Friday morning? We expect 160 overall with the majority in the 120 mile and relay events. What type of runners do you plan to attract? Well trained! We have distances from 9 (relay) to 120 miles to suit many levels. There will be some elite racers who hope to beat previous winning times or come within 5 hours of last year’s winner. Do you organize other races during the Weekend? If so, on what distances? There are several events. The 120-mile and relay start on Friday. The other events 70, 50, 30 and 20 mile start on Saturday. Credit : Heather Macdonald At that time of the year, what kind of weather can we expect? It can be hot in the day (last year it was 34 degrees Celsius) and cool at night at the higher elevations. Have you planned festivities around the race? Just completing this race is worth celebrating! Other than the great barbecue at the finish line, we are also planning a party this year. The race finished, what advice would you give a runner who has never been to Fat Dog before? A good restaurant, a fancy sightseeing? Local wineries, great camping, white water rafting, visit Vancouver home of the 2010 winter Olympics.
