About the event

Thousands of participants from around the globe have the unique opportunity to take part in the Midnight Sun Marathon, held annually in Tromsø, the Arctic capital of Norway. Located 350 km north of the Arctic Circle, the city is situated on a small island surrounded by sea and stunning mountains. Home to stark contrasts in nature, the area provides an intense running experience. During summer months, the sun never sets below the horizon, making running under the Midnight Sun an unforgettable experience.

Competitors can choose from five different distances: Marathon (42,2km), Mizuno Half Marathon (21,1km), Coop Mila (10km), iTromsø Mini-marathon (5km) and SNN Kids Race (500m). The races attract cheering crowds of locals along the streets of the course, turning this day into a festival.

Course highlights

The Midnight Sun Marathon is a great trail that starts in the center and goes over the Tromsø bridge after approx. 2km. at the top of the bridge you will have a view towards Tromsdalstinden and the Arctic Cathedral. In Tromsdalen, the track goes south towards Solligården to Berg and on to the turn at Sandvika. The trail goes back the same way over the bridge, through the center of Tromsø, around the southern tip of Tromsøya to the turn at Vangberg, then back to the center and finish in Storgata by Kirkeparken. If we are lucky with the weather, marathon runners will see the midnight sun in the north and have a view of the beautiful snow-covered mountains outside Tromsø. The race and the distance are control measured and certified by AIMS.

10 km

I ran 21.1k in June 2019. It was cloudy, raining, almost no wind and about 11 degrees Celsius. The track was mostly flat (I guess max. 7 m under and above sea level). I loved the location and the fact that it was light in the middle of the night. Everything was well organized. I ran faster than I thought I would run, so that was an amazing experience (1:55:28). It would have been perfect if the sun showed herself :)

I did 10km run. Struggled a bit as I have not done much in July. However I was determined to complete the run in time for closing date. It was a good experience.
