TC100M after the experience of the first two editions of the 100 miles, some precautions were necessary, so a real restyling of the track was made, practically dividing the Valdorcia into three parts: the " Valdorcia of Wine" which will go up to Montalcino to return to life base in Castiglione d'Orcia, the "Classic Valdorcia" it will travel through the territories of San Quirico d'Orcia and Pienza which with the 53 km will return to Castiglione d'Orcia and the "Mountain Valdorcia" which will rise to 1100 meters above sea level. DESCRIPTION It will be a 100 miles long dream that will start at 5.00pm, will see the sunset, the night, the sunrise through woods, vineyards, white roads, it will descend to the Orcia river and head towards the famous Cypresses of the Triboli valley (the most photographed in the world) and then head to Torrenieri, an ancient post station on the Via Francigena, it will go up to Montalcino, a medieval village famous for its wine "his Majesty the BRUNELLO ", to then head towards the Abbey of Sant'Antimo founded according to the legend by Charlemagne, will cross Castelnuovo dell'Abate and then return to cross the Orcia river again and return to Castiglione d'Orcia where there will be the first base life at the 60th km, then passing under the Rocca di Tentennano (your lighthouse for the whole race) you cross Rocca d'Orcia and go down to the ancient Bagno Vignoni spa famous for its pool in the center of the village, go up to San Quirico d'Orcia, a town rich in history located on the Via Francigena where Federico Barbarossa was crowned Emperor of the Holy Empire, we will cross the lands made famous by the film "The Gladiator" with its Elysian Fields and the church of the Madonna di Vitaleta, to reach Pienza, the ideal city wanted by Pope Pius II, now a UNESCO heritage site, still hills and arrive in Monticchiello, a town rich in history and recently famous for its "Teatro Povero" where all the inhabitants recite, you go down the Via Agogna where you can enjoy a 360 ° view of the Valdorcia, you ford the river again and you get to Gallina (2 ^ life base) and here begins the real Tuscany Crossing .... you start to climb towards Campiglia d'Orcia, a town located around the Bell Tower that dominates the valley, then descend again to Bagni San Filippo, famous for its White Whale a magnificent co limestone formation formed thanks to the gushing of the thermal waters that make the landscape suggestive, go up for 7 km towards the Vivo d'Orcia the highest point of the race (1050 meters above sea level) begins the descent to get to the last refreshment point in Poggio Rosa up at the lowest point of the final phase at 207 meters above sea level but it's not over ... a series of ups and downs will take you to the final climb to get to "conquer the Rocca" and the deserved final prize .. Interview: Tuscany Crossing Val d'Orcia 100 km

29 Dec, 2016 (Thu)

Credit : Anthony Argentieri Hello, on April 22nd 2017, you’ll be organizing the Tuscany Crossing Val d’Orcia 100 km. Can you tell us where it is located? The Tuscany Crossing is located on southern Tuscany, more precisely in the area of Siena. The most famous places of this area are Pienza, Montalcino, Bagno Vignoni and Bagni San Filippo, little jewels of Tuscany for their architecture, history and food. How old is the race and why was it created? This year it’s the fifth year of Tuscany Crossing. We’ve decided to create the race to give the opportunity to know the natural trail of our Unesco Natural, Artistic and Cultural Park, the Val d’Orcia Park. I think that this area is still unknown for a lot of people in the world and I think that every person will enjoy it. §staticmap(17137,6,800,200) What kind of route have you set up for the runners? How would you describe it? The route is along the major roads that, in Roman period, joined Roma to Oltralpe, the Romea, the Cassia and the Francigena crossed by Sigerico, Archbishop of Canterbury, and many illustrious travelers, warriors, saints and brigands; they left in this area as witness fortifications, castles and medieval churches, still present in the area. We will always run in the beautiful Tuscan countryside on dirt roads and woodland trails, crossing famous villages, climbing up the slopes of Monte Amiata (1,100m above sea level). What are the distances on the agenda? The distance are 103 Km, 50 Km, 15 Km and a 4 runners relay. How many runners do you expect on Saturday morning? We expect to have about 500 runners. What type of runners do you plan to attract? The competition is designed for all types of runners, the characteristics of the path suit to those who want to run fast and to those who want to enjoy the views and places. Credit : Anthony Argentieri At that time of the year, what kind of weather can we expect? The weather in this period of the year is highly variable, it can be sunny or rainy, with temperature from 5° to 20°C. The temperature can be variable also during the same day having a freezing race departure and a warm period during the race. Have you planned festivities around the event? Families can also participate to the event, there will be a walk of 15 km where all participants can join and, after the walk, everyone can wait the runners visiting the stands in the medieval village of Castiglione d’Orcia.. The race finished, what advice would you give a runner who has never been to Castiglione d’Orcia before? A good restaurant, a fancy sightseeing? The area is full of small restaurants with typical tuscan foods, they are all fantastic. You can taste the local dishes as “I Pici”, seasoned pasta, or the typical tuscan salami and pecorino cheese, all drinking fine wines : Brunello di Montalcino or Orcia Rosso. In a single sentence, what would you tell the readers of ahotu Marathons to make them register for the Tuscany Crossing Val d’Orcia 100 km? Come to run in this dream along 103 Km because we organize this race and we have dreamed it for a very long time. We want to show the beauty of our land, which is a reason of pride for all the inhabitants of the valley, who work to make the athletes feel right at home.
